Campaign Chronicle - Librus Nocturnum

Session 0 - 2025-11-09 - Character Creation & Campaign Setup

Status: Characters INCOMPLETE - finalization pending Module: Generic tutorial dungeon (NOT part of Librus Nocturnum anthology)

Session Overview

First session focused on campaign setup, rules review, character creation, and a generic tutorial dungeon to learn Foundry VTT mechanics. No official Librus Nocturnum adventure modules were run.

Major Events

  • Party created characters using homebrew rolling system (4d6 reroll 1s/2s, drop lowest, 3 sets)
  • Completed generic tutorial dungeon with combat, puzzles, and skill challenges
  • Practiced Foundry VTT mechanics (token movement, rolling, inventory)
  • All players attended (Cieth, Dial, Skykros, Yrene, Baji)

Rules Established

  • Death is Permanent: No resurrection magic exists in this world
  • Session Benefits: 1 Advantage (declare before roll) + 1 Mulligan (after seeing result), stackable, use-it-or-lose-it
  • Proficiency = Damage Die: Add proficiency die to damage instead of flat bonus
  • Milestone Leveling: No XP tracking
  • No Metagaming: Players should not look up monsters or modules
  • Combat Etiquette: Know your action, keep combat moving

Campaign Setup Discussions

  • Player interests expressed:
  • Adventures, stories, looting, combat
  • Problem-solving and mysteries
  • Roleplay opportunities (Dial especially)
  • Criminal activity/heists (Skykros, Baji)
  • Quests with clear goals (Yrene)
  • Genre preferences: Fantasy, thrillers, dystopian, action (anime influences for Baji)

  • Scheduling: 2-week advance polling system established at https://dnd-r.bros.ninja

  • Minimum 3 players + DM to run
  • Players want to meet at least once weekly, possibly twice
  • Poll options: Yes / If Need Be / No

Tutorial Dungeon Experience

  • Generic dungeon to practice mechanics (not from Librus Nocturnum)
  • Combat encounter went well, players learned initiative and actions
  • Puzzle challenges had mixed results (fill-in-blank puzzle didn't work, sliding puzzle too difficult)
  • Players showed preference for physical/environmental puzzles (moving statues, searching for keys)
  • Introduced loot and inventory management
  • Some NPCs included (talking cat mentioned in notes)

Character Status

All characters are INCOMPLETE and awaiting finalization: - Cieth: Character details pending - Dial: Character details pending - Skykros: Character details pending - Yrene: Character details pending - Baji: Character details pending

Foundry VTT Learning

  • Players learned token movement and basic controls
  • Character sheet interaction and rolling mechanics
  • Inventory management and item dragging
  • Some equipment gaps discovered (unarmed attacks, torches, starter gear need to be added)
  • Players created actors before DM arrived and provided macro guidance

DM Observations

  • Character creation went smoothly overall
  • Some mechanical hiccups with Foundry (unarmed attacks as items, equipment setup)
  • Session ran longer than planned due to puzzle difficulties
  • Players engaged well but split attention at times (some wanted to continue dungeon, others talked to NPC)
  • Puzzles need better design for group participation
  • Combat etiquette and mechanics need refinement

Follow-Up Actions Needed

  • Schedule next session using polling system
  • Provide players with background/backstory information
  • DM to study 2024 D&D rules more thoroughly
  • DM to review all character sheets in detail once finalized
  • Set up equipment shop in Foundry dashboard
  • Add missing starter equipment to character sheets

Ongoing Threads

  • Characters need to be finalized with complete equipment
  • First official Librus Nocturnum adventure to be selected
  • Party composition and dynamic still forming
  • Players expressed interest in Librus Nocturnum's themes (horror, mystery, dark fantasy)

Session 1 - [Date TBD]

Module: To be determined (first official Librus Nocturnum adventure)
